INTRODUCING THE UNIVERSITY OF THE THIRD AGE

WHAT IS U3A?

In a nutshell, U3A is a learning co-operative for "Third Agers" (retired people). Its objective is to be a university in the original sense of the word - a community of teachers and learners - sharing interests and enthusiasms.  It has been found that there is a very real need for accessible and stimulating opportunities at the stage in life when people have a little more free time for self-development.

HOW U3A WORKS

The basis is small study and discussion groups, on an unlimited range of topics, mostly held in private homes. These on-going community-based study groups, and other activities such as outings or workshops, are led by retired volunteers with expertise and enthusiasm, who act as facilitators.  Membership is open to all.

COURSE STRUCTURE

Activities are held during the day on weekdays, which suits retired people.  A facilitator develops a framework for a course, with some flexibility, depending on the needs of the group. Courses seem to find their own way of operating, by consensus.  There is a strong emphasis on participation and involvement. No marks are awarded, no qualifications are required, and none are given. At U3A, we are retired people who learn for pleasure.

FEES

U3A charges an annual membership fee of R25.This permits attendance at as many courses as one wishes. In addition, members pay R4 per session they attend, R3 of which goes to the hostess to cover the costs of tea, and R1 goes to U3A towards administrative costs. A small further charge may be required to cover the cost of course material.

HOW DID U3A START?

U3A began in France in 1972, in Toulouse.  In the French model, faculty members and working academics are course facilitators and lecturers.  With its spread to England it was soon realised that Third Agers have the skills to organise and teach their own learning groups.  This autonomous model has now been adopted around the world.  South Africa now has 13 U3A branches.

U3A IN PRETORIA

U3A Pretoria was launched in 2002 and now has over 275 members. At the beginning of 2005 25 courses were offered to members and in addition at least four general lectures are planned for the year.
