NEWSLETTER JULY , 2008
This month’s meeting : Tuesday, 29th July.
Speaker: MARK WIGGETT, Cartoonist for THE HERALD.
Come and meet the man who has kept you entertained with his daily cartoons on current events.
Speaker for our August meeting: Hilary Viljoen who will talk to us on the very important topic of recycling.
TOUR:
Wednesday, 6th August - The Jewish Museum - 10am – 11.30 am
This is situated on the corner of Raleigh and Edward Streets behind the PE College at the top of Russel Road.
For those members who have been attending Shirley Payne’s talks and slides on Israel, this visit should be most interesting.
While on the subject of tours, Arthur and myself met 26 members of a U3A group from Prague in the Czech Republic who were here on a tour of the Western and Eastern Cape and were meeting up with some of the U3A’s en route. On their way from Addo National Park to the Tzitsikamma we entertained them to tea and cake at the South End Museum after the Curator had given them a guided tour. Most of them could not speak much English but through their translator we were informed that they were thoroughly enjoying South Africa and should we ever want to visit them in Prague, we would be most welcome.
.
COURSES:
Shirley Payne will be starting a 5 week talk and slide-show presentation on Israel
Starting on Tuesday, the 22nd of this month at 2pm – 3.30pm at the Squire Dixon Hall at the Newton Park Methodist Church. Tea and coffee will be provided. A small donation will be welcome.
Shirley’s Prophetic Israel talks will also be continuing on Monday evening at 7 pm at Shirley’s home. Please contact Shirley on 041-3653279 for details.
Armchair Travel with Shirley will also continue on the 1st Wednesday of each month from 9.30am to Noon at her home in Newton Park and on the last Sunday of each month from 11am – 4 pm when a Bring and Share finger lunch will be arranged. Contact Shirley on 041-3653279 for details.
BOWLS:
David Broadbent has organized with the Victoria Park Bowling Club near 1st Avenue, Walmer, for interested members to play on their bowling greens every Thursday morning from 8.45 am. No club membership is necessary and they will charge a minimal amount of R15 per morning, which will include tea and coffee in the clubhouse.
It is also not necessary to wear regulation-bowling clothes. This will be a casual morning. The only insistence is that flat-soled shoes be worn.
Please contact David on 041-3681148.
If any members have sets of bowls they do not want, please let us know.
CRYPTIC CROSSWORD PUZZLES:
Ann Burbidge has kindly offered to help any of our members who are as confused as I am by cryptic crosswords. You can ‘phone Ann during the day on 041-3711637.
U3A is about improving our minds by listening and learning from others. This is an ideal opportunity to learn a new skill.
RAFFLE:
This month’s meeting will be everyone’s last chance to buy a raffle ticket to help us purchase our own projector. 1 ticket will cost R5 and 3 will cost R10. Prizes are a Gift Voucher for 250 and one for R150. The draw will take place after the meeting.
APPEAL:
It has come to our notice that many feeding schemes are suffering from lack of funds.
This is an appeal to all our members to search their cupboards for blankets and jerseys they do not need and for everyone to bring one non-perishable food item to the meeting for us to distribute to those organizations that help the poor and needy.
Do try and remember. There are so many that have so little. Let us see how we can help in these cold Winter months.
See you on the 29th.
