U3A Joburg North - News, September 2011

U3A Joburg North holds its Monthly meetings on the first Tuesday of every month at 9h30 for 10h00. Our venue is at the North Rand Methodist Church, 174, Blandford Road, North Riding. All Retirees are welcome to join us. Our membership has climbed the ladder to almost 250 members, our members are very active in encouraging new people to join us. We have had four Committee members almost since inception (August 2010),  however two new members have joined the committee and of course we have a little band of enthusiastic people who help the committee with various jobs, we could not have managed without their help.

We are hoping to be involved with the Retirement Expo being held at Northgate Dome on 28th, 29th and 30th October 2011. They will give us a table and we hope with help from our members to man the stall for those three days. By doing this, we are hoping to swell our numbers by letting people know what U3A is all about. Undoubtably hard work, but we hope it will be well worth it for our branch and U3A in general.

We recently had our meeting on 6th September and had a delightful speaker from SA Rescue Dogs Association, there were two ladies who brought three dogs with them. This talk was very interesting, especially when we were informed that the dogs were normal house dogs, which have been trained by the these ladies to find lost people, bodies or to track people, however they were not dogs that find drugs, alcohol and that type of thing, police dogs are trained for that purpose.

For our next meeting on Tuesday 4th October,  Tony Twine will be speaking on "What will happen to motor vehicles once petrol-producing oil is exhausted. Now there is something to think about.

On Tuesday 1st November Pieter van Niekerk, who is blind, will bring his guide dog and tell us how  these lovely dogs are trained from puppies to adulthood. Pieter gives an extremely informative talk. This will be our last talk before the recess for the Festive season, we reopen again on Tuesday 7th February 2012.
