Howick is a moderately sized town situated in the Midlands of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, near the city of Pietermaritzburg. It has a large, friendly population of retirees, who are attracted by the country atmosphere, scenic beauty, climate and ready access to quality medical facilities, shops and restaurants.
Howick has a flourishing U3A. It was formed in 2007 and has over 100 members, who come from Howick and surrounding areas, including Hilton and Pietermaritzburg (which does not have a U3A). We welcome new members and cordially invite visitors to our general meetings.
General meetings are held on the second Wednesday of every second month (January, March, May, July, September, November). The venue is the Team Teaching Room at at the Howick High School (entrance through the tennis court gate in Amber Avenue). Notices of the meetings are sent to members and published in The Witness and the Howick newspaper Village Talk. The meetings are addressed by prominent speakers on a variety of topics. Recent speakers have included authors discussing the background to their books and people with fascinating hobbies.
Interest groups run by members meet once a month, usually in the convener’s home. They are open to paid-up members only. Currently the following topics are offered:
