“We are all inquisitive creatures by nature and our minds seek the empowering substance of knowledge”. With this is mind, Helderberg members have been encouraged to embrace a Creed of Discovery for 2008. With all that U3A has to offer its members, following a journey of discovery is easy – exciting speakers, varied courses, social interaction and 700 potential new friends.

DISCOVER – Open Day on March 5th

If you have wondered what goes on at some of the groups then this is your opportunity to find out more.

Course leaders will be stationed around the hall to answer questions and tell you more about their particular course. Some have planned presentations or displays and we encourage members to come along and bring a friend who may be interested. There is no visitor fee for this day.

The meeting will be longer than usual 9am to 1.00pm – and the regular meeting will take place between 10-11am with guest speaker,  Ian McCallum, wilderness expert, author, psychiatrist who will address us on “Tracking the Human Animal.”

DISCOVER – The Hidden World Behind the Shacks

Member, Elise Elsing, retired in 1995 after working in construction for many years. She continues her work on a volunteer basis building pre-schools, Community and Training Centres to help the people, especially women and children, of Khayelitsha. She would love to take U3A members on a tour to see, not the huts visible from the N2, but a vibrant community of shopping centres, schools, swimming pool, Magistrate’s court and other official buildings. Elise’s mother who lives in Germany is the fund-raiser for the various children’s projects and you can view her web site at www.Khayelitsha.de.

Any members interested in joining the morning tour please give names to Judy Henry.

DISCOVER – Golf Croquet

Member, Susan Crole is the official PRO for the upcoming International Golf Croquet Championships which this year centre around Kelvin Grove Croquet Club, Newlands.

She suggests members might enjoy the opportunity to observe these exciting games and develop an interest in Croquet.

There will be two matches played in our Helderberg area at Somerset West and Helderberg Croquet Clubs.  For more information contact Susan on 021 851 5553.
