U3A Athlone

The Athlone U3A was formally launched on 17th May 2012. It hosts its monthly public meetings at the Belthorn Recreation Centre on the third Thursday of each month. Many of the Courses/ Learning Opportunities (LO's) it offers are run from the Clubhouse at the same venue.

Athlone U3A also regularly hosts fund-raising events. These have included a Wellness Day in 2013 and the recent Evening of Words and Music where people were invited to "Gooi a tafel" which is the local way of describing an event where entertainment is provided and a host/hostess prepares a special table of treats, a la high tea style, for his/her invited guests.

Its members come from Athlone, Rondebosch, Diep River, Maitland, Rylands etc and are a wide ranging multicultural group. It has a vibrant Poetry and Creative Writing group and has a fast growing group of ladies who start their week off each Monday morning with a lively and fun-filled aerobic session.

Directions to Belthorn Recreation Centre

If you are on the mountain side of the M5 (Kroomboom Parkway) head towards the Kenilworth turnoff and leave the M5 near the Kenilworth Centre. You will enter Racecourse Road and will travel in the direction which places the mountain at your back. Equally, if you are not on the M5 head simply towards the Kenilworth Centre and Access Park.

Cross the bridge over the M5. Keep straight ahead. Once you cross the bridge over the railway line, it becomes Turfhall Road. Continue straight along this road (60km speed cameras!). Cross the Jan Smuts Drive intersection and continue straight on alongside a large sports field on your left-hand side. At the next intersection turn left into Belgravia Road.

Turn immediately left at the next corner into Kinder Road. Continue along the side of the sports ground and turn left into the entrance to the sports ground. Turn left again into the parking area and head towards the main building. This is the Belthorn Recreation Centre. Enter through the front glass doors. Ask for Jacki Lange and have a great time!
