U3A Writing

An unusual way of looking at story creation – but then, Lee always has a very
different way of expressing herself on paper!

THE LETTER

By

LEE COHEN

Z was feeling rather low and despondent. He could not find accommodation
anywhere. For weeks now he had been hunting for a few words or even one word
where he could feel comfortable. He had some references and had tried them. He felt
sure that exercise would be good. He also attempted flyers?

They really had potential, or so he thought. But alas it was not to be. On requesting
to get into either of these, he was told as he had been told on numerous occasions,

“Sorry Mr. Z, S has filled these positions and it is working extremely well thank you.”

Now Z had heard about S taking up space everywhere, and frankly it irritated him
somewhat. She after all was just a curvy replica of himself; a sort of feminine version!
What could he do? The few places he fitted into were not nearly enough. He was not
as popular as most other letters but sadly never realised that he may have had a
uniqueness that none of the others had. A temper though he certainly had; and his
jagged edges were sharp.

He made up his mind to get revenge. He would ‘Zoom in’ and ‘Zap’ right into ‘S’ while
she was in ‘Sleep’. He felt ‘Zero’ for her.

“Although,” on second thoughts, he decided, “Perhaps I should leave her to ‘Suffer.”
He had forgotten about her living in that word and started repeating it, at first in his
head and then out loud, ”Suffer, Suffer, Suffer!”

This made him feel good and he had a sense that she was hurting. Then ‘Suddenly’
hit his brain and stunned him. He fell and ‘Zoned’ out. When he came to, his memory
was a little shaky but he didn’t feel as nasty. He was calmer and realised that ‘S’ was
only doing what she was created to do and like each letter, this was her job.

It gave him an idea. He would do a course in Languages and so travel the world. He
would then discover foreign words too and if he tried extra hard, he could join up with
other letters and extend his lines and become maybe a great work of art! The letter
could even turn into a picture or some wonderful architecture, the possibilities were
endless.

In years to come Z would leave his home in the alphabet and start a career in a
‘Zillion, Zany Zig-Zag’ shapes.
